2020 is a critically important year for sustainable business, with scientists warning that we only have 10 years left to act to avert the worst impacts of climate change, and deadlines falling due for commitments to end deforestation and cut CO2 emissions.
But it is not just about climate change: the Sustainable Development Goals, with their much broader agenda for social and economic transformation, will also be five years old next year, an important staging post for delivering on them by 2030.

Deforestation risk part 1
2020 is the year that companies in the Consumer Goods Forum committed to end deforestation in their supply chains, yet this deadline will be missed by the vast majority. This month, we will do a deep dive into the supply chains for palm oil and forest and timber products, and assess new strategies companies are implementing to fulfil those commitments, including Mars’ move to radically shorten its palm oil supply chain and the adoption of landscape-level approaches by companies like Unilever and Nestlé. We will also examine the impact of palm oil boycotts by companies and consumers.
Deforestation risk part 2
In part 2 of our series on deforestation risk supply chains we will look at the climate risk commodities of soya and beef, with a focus on Brazil as well as North America and Europe.
Smart and resilient cities and energy efficiency
This briefing will look at cities that are becoming more resilient, through the use of nature-based solutions, and the increasingly important agenda of ensuring access to cooling in a warming world.
Our second briefing will focus on the global drive to double energy efficiency in both buildings and industrial processes.
Climate and good governance activism
An era of climate and social activism, looking at the impact of employee and student activism; also activist investors, Climate Action 100+ the divestment movement and whether gas has a role in a below 2C world. The briefing will also examine the pressure on companies to pay their fair share of tax and end the practice of backing lobby groups that are trying to scupper progressive regulation.
Accelerating the circular economy
Full issue focus on circular economy, featuring new developments on tackling plastic, including the US-based Sea the Future initiative to voluntarily accept a tax on virgin plastics, involvement of investors like BlackRock and Morgan Stanley in directing finance, plus social plastics. Also we delve into e-waste, including mobile phone companies’ cross-industry initiative.
The transformation of energy
Technology-focused issue on the energy transition, particularly looking at energy storage technologies and hydrogen, electrification etc. Also, the rise of geothermal energy.
Sustainable seafood and healthy oceans
The UNFCC’s recently released special report on the ocean and cryosphere in a changing climate highlighted that ocean-based solutions, from offshore wind and tidal power to sustainable seafoodand cleaner shipping, could provide 21% of the solutions to climate change. This briefing will explore the new front in the climate battle.
Are science-based targets up to scratch?
This issue will highlight successes, but also take a critical look at limitations such as the lack of third-party verification that CO2 reductions are delivered, calls for human rights to be included, and sectors, like fashion industry, which are taking a sectoral approach to SBTs.
